एक समय रघु दास नाम के भगवान रामचन्द्र के एक महान भक्त थे। वह पुरी में जगन्नाथ मंदिर के सिंह द्वार के पास एक बड़ी छतरी के नीचे रहते थे। एक बार जब वह भगवान जगन्नाथ के दर्शन करने गये तो उन्होंने जगन्नाथ की वेदी पर राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता को देखा। उस दिन से उन्हें विश्वास हो गया कि भगवान जगन्नाथ, भगवान रामचन्द्र से भिन्न नहीं हैं। रघु ने भगवान जगन्नाथ के प्रति मैत्रीपूर्ण प्रेम, सख्य रस विकसित किया। एक बार रघु ने भगवान जगन्नाथ के लिए एक अच्छी माला तैयार की और पुजारी को भगवान को चढ़ाने के लिए दी। लेकिन पुजारी इसे चढ़ाना नहीं चाहता था, क्योंकि रघु ने केले के पेड़ की छाल से बनी डोरी का इस्तेमाल किया था। उस समय जगन्नाथ के मंदिर में ऐसी चीजों का उपयोग वर्जित था।
रघु को बहुत दुख हुआ कि उनकी माला भगवान जगन्नाथ को नहीं चढ़ाई गई। वह बहुत उदास महसूस करते हुए मंदिर से बाहर चला गया। बाद में दिन में, पुजारी शाम की आरती समाप्त कर रहा था। भगवान के शयन करने से पहले पुजारी उन्हें एक विशेष पोशाक पहनाते हैं जिसे बड़ा श्रृंगार-वेसा कहा जाता है। भगवान को श्रृंगारित करने के बाद, पुजारी ने उनके शरीर को फूलों से सजाना शुरू कर दिया। लेकिन उसे आश्चर्य हुआ कि उसने जो कुछ भी किया, भगवान के शरीर पर एक भी फूल नहीं बचा। भगवान किसी भी फूल को स्वीकार नहीं करेंगे। सभी पुजारी यह सोचकर बहुत चिंतित हो गये कि अवश्य ही उन्होंने कोई अपराध किया है। लेकिन यह क्या हो सकता था?
उन सभी ने निर्णय लिया कि यह समझने की कोशिश करने के लिए कि उन्होंने क्या अपराध किया है, वे सभी मंदिर में सोएंगे और तब तक उपवास करेंगे जब तक भगवान उनके सपनों में आकर उन्हें उनके अपराध के बारे में सूचित नहीं कर देते। निश्चित रूप से, उसी रात भगवान जगन्नाथ मुख्य पुजारी के सपने में आए और उनसे कहा, “मेरे भक्त रघु दास मेरे लिए एक फूल माला लाए हैं। उन्होंने इसे बहुत प्रेम और भक्ति से तैयार किया। आपने डोरे की बाहरी विशेषता देखी और उसे माला मुझे देने से मना कर दिया। आप देख नहीं सकते कि उसने कितनी अच्छी माला तैयार की। उन्होंने इसे प्रेम और भक्ति से पिरोया। अब मेरा भक्त मेरी सेवा से वंचित होकर माला सामने रखकर अपने घर में पड़ा हुआ है। उसने कुछ भी नहीं खाया है और लगातार रो रहा है. वह अभी तक सोया नहीं है. जब तक मेरे भक्त की इच्छा पूरी नहीं हो जाती, मैं आपसे कोई माला कैसे स्वीकार कर चैन से सो सकता हूँ?”
तुरंत प्रधान पुजारी जाग गया और उसने अन्य पुजारियों को सारी बात बताई। तब वे सभी रघु दास के पास गए और अपना अपराध समझाया, और उनसे अपनी माला भगवान जगन्नाथ को देने के लिए कहा। यह सुनकर रघु दास बहुत प्रसन्न हुए कि भगवान इतने दयालु हैं कि वे स्वयं उनकी माला स्वीकार करने की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं।

There was once a great devotee of Lord Rama chandra named Raghu Dasa. He lived in Puri under a big umbrella near the Lion Gate of the Jagannath temple. Once when he went to see Lord Jagannath he saw Rama, Laxman, and Sita on Jagannath’s altar. From that day on he was convinced that Lord Jagannath was non- different from Lord Ramachandra. Raghu developed friendly love, sakhya rasa, for Lord Jagannath.
Once Raghu prepared a nice garland for Lord Jagannath and gave it to the pujari to offer to the Lord. But the pujari did not want to offer it, since Raghu had used a string made from the bark of the banana tree. At that time use of such things was prohibited in Jagannath’s temple.Raghu felt very sad that his garland was not offered to Lord Jagannath. He left the temple feeling very down. Later in the day, the pujari was finishing the evening arati. Before the Lord goes to bed the pujaris dress Him in a special dress called bada sringar-vesa. After dressing the Lord, the pujari started to decorate His body with flowers. But to his surprise, whatever he did, not a single flower would remain on the Lord’s body. The Lord would not accept any of the flowers. All the pujaris became very worried, thinking that they must have committed some offense.
But what could it have been? They all decided that to try to understand what offense they had committed, they would all sleep in the temple and fast until the Lord appeared to them in their dreams to inform them of their offense. Sure enough, that same night Lord Jagannath appeared in the dream of the head pujari, and told him, “My devotee Raghu Dasa brought a flower garland for Me. He prepared it with so much love and devotion. You saw the external feature of the string and denied him permission to give the garland to Me. You could not see how nicely he prepared the garland. He strung it with love and devotion. Now my devotee, being deprived of my service, is lying in his house keeping die garland in front of him. He has not eaten anything and is constantly crying. He has not yet slept. How can I accept any garland from you and sleep peacefully unless My devotee’s desire has been fulfilled?”
Immediately the head pujari woke up and told everything to the other pujaris. Then all of them went to Raghu Dasa and explained their offense, and asked him to give his garland to Lord Jagannath. Raghu Dasa was very happy to hear that the Lord is so merciful that He was personally waiting to accept his garland. Raghu Dasa was in ecstasy.
