What Is Chitalagi Amavasya?

Chitalagi Amavasya, fondly known as Chitau Amavasya, is a beloved Odia festival celebrated in the sacred month of Shravan. It beautifully unites faith, tradition, and the rhythms of nature. On this auspicious day, priests ceremoniously reattach the golden forehead ornaments (Chita) to the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra—signifying divine renewal, grace, and protection.

This Amavasya also marks the traditional offering of Chitau Pitha (rice pancakes) to the deities — a practice believed to bring blessings of health, harmony, and prosperity.
