Singha Sankranti:
Singha Sankranti, also known as Simha Sankranti or Simha Sankraman, marks the transition of the Sun into the Leo zodiac sign (Singha in Sanskrit). It is one of the twelve Sankrantis observed throughout the year in the Hindu calendar, each marking the Sun’s transition into a new zodiac sign. Singha Sankranti usually falls around August 16th or 17th every year, according to the solar calendar.
The word “Sankranti” refers to the movement of the Sun from one zodiac sign to another. It is considered an auspicious time for religious activities and rituals. During Singha Sankranti, devotees often take a holy dip in sacred rivers or lakes, especially the Ganges or other significant water bodies. This act is believed to cleanse sins and bring merit.
In some regions, people offer prayers to Lord Vishnu or Lord Surya (Sun god) during this time. They may also donate food, clothes, or money to the needy as a form of charity. Singha Sankranti holds cultural significance, with various customs and traditions observed across different states in India.
Putrada Ekadashi:
Putrada Ekadashi, also known as Pavitropana Ekadashi, is a significant Hindu fasting day observed on the Ekadashi (11th day) of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) in the Hindu month of Shravana (July-August). It is believed to be a highly auspicious day for married couples seeking blessings for children (especially sons), as “Putra” means son and “Ekadashi” refers to the 11th day of the lunar fortnight.
On Putrada Ekadashi, devotees observe a strict fast from sunrise to sunrise the following day. They abstain from consuming grains, beans, certain vegetables, and any form of cereals. Some may even refrain from drinking water during the fast, depending on their level of devotion and health conditions.
The day is spent in prayers, meditation, and recitation of sacred texts like the Vishnu Sahasranama (thousand names of Lord Vishnu). Devotees visit Vishnu temples and offer special prayers seeking blessings for progeny, particularly sons, and for the well-being of their families.
Legend has it that observing Putrada Ekadashi with sincerity and devotion can fulfill desires related to progeny and remove obstacles in the way of parenthood. It is believed that Lord Vishnu, the preserver in the Hindu trinity, blesses devotees with good health, prosperity, and the fulfillment of their wishes on this sacred day.
Both Singha Sankranti and Putrada Ekadashi hold deep spiritual and cultural significance in Hindu tradition, emphasizing devotion, purification, and the seeking of divine blessings for prosperity and familial happiness.
